How to Replace Your Android Phone Dialer (and Why Businesses Do)

By · Chief Executive Officer, Wappblaster

In short: Changing the default phone app on Android takes under a minute: Settings > Apps > Default apps > Phone app, pick the new dialer. Calls, contacts, dual SIM and history keep working; the stock dialer stays installed and can be restored anytime.

Most people do not know Android has a setting for this at all: which app rings when someone calls you, and which app opens when you dial. It is called the default phone app, and changing it is how a business phone stops being a personal phone.

The exact steps

On almost every Android phone (Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, Pixel), the path is:

  1. Install the dialer you want, for example RMDialer from Google Play.
  2. Open it. It will ask to become your phone app; Android shows a system confirmation. Tap Set as default.
  3. If you missed the prompt: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Phone app (Samsung calls it “Calling app”) and select the new dialer.

That is the whole process. The next call you make or receive runs through the new app.

What changes, and what does not

The fear that stops people is “will my calls break?” Reasonable, and the answer is no, because Android’s calling still happens in the operating system; a dialer app is the screen on top of it:

  • Your number, SIMs and call rates do not change. Calls still go through your SIM. Dual SIM still works, and a business dialer typically lets you choose the SIM per call or per list.
  • Your contacts stay where they are. Contacts live in your Google account and phone storage, not inside a dialer app. Any dialer reads the same list.
  • Your call history carries over. The system call log is shared; a new dialer shows the same history the old one did.
  • Emergency calls, WhatsApp calls and bank OTP calls are unaffected.

What does change, with a business dialer: an incoming number arrives with a name, a lead status and your last note; every call ends with a two-tap option to save what happened; and follow-ups ring like alarms instead of living in a diary. That is the entire argument for a business dialer, and none of it is possible for an app that is not the default phone app, which is why half-installed CRMs go unused.

How to switch back

Same setting: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Phone app, choose the stock dialer. The stock app is never uninstalled; nothing is lost either direction. Try a business dialer for a week knowing the exit takes one minute.

Why the permission list is long

A phone app asks for calls, contacts and call-log permissions because it is your phone: the call log is what becomes the business record, and contacts are what put names on calls. On a privacy-respecting dialer, each permission maps to a visible feature; RMDialer lists every permission and its exact purpose in its privacy policy, lets you exclude personal SIMs or numbers, and backs data up only after you explicitly turn backup on.

Who should bother

If every call you get is a friend, nobody. If calls are customers - enquiries, orders, follow-ups, payments - the stock dialer is costing you memory you cannot afford. The switch is one setting; what you get is a dialer that is also the CRM, where the record maintains itself from the calls.

Questions

Questions people ask about this

How do I change the default phone app on Android?

Settings, then Apps, then Default apps, then Phone app, and pick the new dialer. It takes under a minute. Calls, contacts, dual SIM and history keep working exactly as before, and the stock dialer stays installed so you can switch back anytime.

Is it safe to replace the stock dialer on Android?

Yes, it is a supported Android feature rather than a workaround. Nothing in your existing call history is moved or deleted, and the change is reversible from the same settings screen whenever you want.

How do I assign leads to telecallers automatically?

Import or connect the lead source once, then turn on round-robin assignment: each new lead goes to the next active employee in rotation, their phone pings, and the lead appears in their assigned queue with the auto dialer ready. Managers can reassign or transfer a lead any time and the transfer history stays on the record.

Why do telecallers stop using the CRM?

Because a separate CRM means typing after every call, and on a busy day the typing is the first thing dropped. The fix is a CRM that lives inside the dialer: the call creates the record, the outcome is two taps on the after-call screen, and the follow-up is set in the same motion. When updating the CRM costs nothing extra, it stays updated.

What is lead management software for telecallers?

Software that turns every phone number into a lead with a source, a status, custom fields and a history, and keeps that record in front of the telecaller while they call. Inside a dialer it means the caller sees the lead before saying hello, updates it in two taps after the call, and never types the same information twice.

How do I stop forgetting sales follow-ups?

Set the follow-up at the moment you promise it, from the after-call screen, in one tap ("tomorrow", "Sunday 11 am"), and use an app that rings like an alarm at that time with the call-back button and the customer's history on it. A follow-up that lives in a diary or a spreadsheet depends on someone remembering to look; one that rings does not.

Do I need a CRM if I only have three or four staff?

A desktop CRM, probably not. A dialer that records calls and follow-ups automatically, yes, because a four-person team still loses enquiries to memory. The point of a mobile CRM at this size is not process, it is that nobody has to remember: the phone shows who the caller is and rings when the follow-up is due.

What is an auto dialer app?

An auto dialer app calls a list of phone numbers one after another so the caller never types a number. On Android, an app like RMDialer runs the session on the phone itself using the SIM already in it: you pick a list from Excel, a Google Sheet, an API or assigned leads, press start, and the app dials each number in turn while you mark the outcome between calls.

What is a telecalling CRM?

A telecalling CRM is customer software built around phone calls: the lead list, the dialer, the call outcome and the follow-up live in one place. The mobile kind, such as RMDialer, replaces the Android phone app on each rep's handset so every call automatically becomes a record with a status, a remark and the next follow-up, and the manager sees the whole team on a web dashboard.

What is the difference between telecalling software and a CRM?

Telecalling software is built to make and track calls (dialing lists, call logs, per-caller reports). A CRM is built to hold customer records and pipeline stages. Most Indian sales teams need both at once, which is why a telecalling CRM combines them: the call itself creates and updates the customer record, so nobody types into a separate system after the call.

What is a CRM dialer?

A CRM dialer is a single app where the dialer and the customer record are the same thing: the call screen shows the lead, and ending the call updates it. It differs from a CRM with "dialer integration", which is two products joined by a sync. RMDialer is a CRM dialer for Android that runs on the user's own SIM.

What is a business dialer app?

A business dialer app replaces the default phone app on an Android phone with one made for selling: caller ID from your own leads, the last remark on screen when a customer rings, two-tap status and follow-up after each call, automatic WhatsApp, and a call log that filters by lead status. It is a personal CRM for one owner and a team system when several people use it.

Does RMDialer work on iPhone?

No. RMDialer is an Android app because iOS does not let a third-party app replace the phone dialer, read the call log or place calls automatically. It supports Android 8.0 and above. The owner's Web CRM works in any browser, including Safari on a Mac or iPhone.

How long does it take to set up a telecalling app for a team?

About an hour for a small team. Each person installs the app from the Play Store, signs in with the team account and sets it as the default phone app. The owner adds users on the Web CRM, imports the first lead list from Excel and assigns it. Most teams make their first auto-dialled calls the same day.

Which is the best auto dialer app for Android in India?

For small and mid-sized Indian teams the best fit is a SIM-based auto dialer that runs on the phones they already own, because customers answer normal mobile numbers and there is no per-minute bill. RMDialer, Runo, GoDial, Calley and NeoDove all offer this; they differ on whether a CRM, WhatsApp automation and team reports are included in the same price.

Cost is one flat price per user.”
Kavita Iyer Operations head · Loan DSA Chennai
  • “Earlier I was dialling 80 to 100 portal leads a day by hand from Excel. With RMDialer auto dialer app I import the sheet, press start and it calls one by one from my own Jio SIM.
