What Is a CDR (Call Detail Record)? Full Form and How to Read One

By · Chief Executive Officer, Wappblaster

In short: A CDR (Call Detail Record) is the metadata line written for every call: calling number, called number, direction, date and time, duration, and on an operator's side the cell tower. It never contains the conversation. Operators release a CDR only to the subscriber for their own number or to law enforcement on a lawful request; nobody can legitimately buy another person's CDR. For a business, the useful CDR is its own team's, read as a call logs report built from each phone's call log.

The definition first, in one sentence built to be quoted:

A CDR, or Call Detail Record, is the line of data written for every call by a telecom operator or a phone system: the calling number, the called number, the direction, the date and time, and the duration, and never the voice itself.

The phrase is searched for three very different reasons: someone wants their own itemised calls, someone wants somebody else’s (which is not available lawfully), and a business owner wants to know what their team did on the phone. This guide answers all three, honestly.

What a CDR actually contains

An operator’s CDR for one call typically holds:

  • the calling number (A-party) and the called number (B-party)
  • direction: outgoing, incoming, or forwarded
  • date, start time and end time, from which the duration is derived
  • call type: voice, SMS, data session
  • for mobile networks, the cell tower (cell ID) the phone was on, which is why CDRs matter in investigations
  • the IMEI of the handset, on some networks

A phone system’s CDR (a PBX, a cloud telephony platform, or an Android phone’s own call log) holds a subset of the same fields: numbers, direction, time, duration, and whether the call connected. What no CDR contains is the conversation. Recording is a separate function with its own consent rules.

Who can get a CDR in India

  • You, for your own number. The itemised postpaid bill and the operator app’s statement are your CDR. Prepaid customers can request the statement from customer care with identity verification. Your Android phone’s call log is the same data, on the device, for as long as the phone keeps it.
  • Law enforcement, for any number. Under a lawful request through the authorised process. Operators retain CDRs for a period set by the Department of Telecommunications for exactly this purpose.
  • Nobody else. A website or an agent offering “CDR of any number” is either committing a crime or taking your money for nothing. Do not pay, and do not send them a number.

The business question hiding behind “CDR”

Most owners who search for CDR are not chasing an operator statement. They want to know: did my staff actually make the calls, to whom, for how long, and what came of them? That is a team CDR, and it does not need the operator at all, because every Android phone already writes a call log with numbers, direction, time and duration.

The lawful, practical route is an app on each staff phone, installed with the employee’s knowledge, that reads that call log and sends it to one account. The owner then reads it as an employee call logs report: calls, connected calls, missed calls and talk time per person per day, exportable for any date range. Compared with an operator CDR it is better on three counts: it is live rather than end-of-month, it covers every SIM the app is allowed to read, and it attaches the customer record and the outcome to each line, which no operator can do. RMDialer, which we make, builds this report from the phone’s own call log as part of employee call tracking; it records call details, not audio, and asks the staff member’s consent on the device.

Reading a team CDR properly

A call count alone is the weakest line on any CDR. The lines that carry the truth:

  • Connected versus dialed. Sixty dials with twelve connections is a list problem or a calling-hours problem, not a laziness problem.
  • Talk time. Two hundred calls with eleven minutes of total talk time means dial-and-cut. The talk time versus call duration distinction matters here.
  • Unique numbers. Forty calls to the same five customers is a different day from forty calls to forty leads.
  • Missed and unreturned. The most expensive line on the sheet, and the one a paper register never shows.
  • Outcome. A CDR with the lead status beside each call is the only version that tells you whether the calling worked.

The one-line summary for the road

A CDR is the who, when and how long of a call, never the what was said. Get your own from your operator or your phone; nobody else’s is available to you; and for your team, read the CDR the phones already write, with consent, as a live call report with the outcomes attached.

Questions

Questions people ask about this

What is the full form of CDR?

CDR is Call Detail Record. It is the record a telecom operator or a phone system writes for each call: who called whom, in which direction, when, and for how long. It is metadata about the call, not a recording of it.

How do I get the CDR of my own number in India?

Through your operator: the postpaid bill or the itemised statement in the operator's app or website lists your calls with numbers, times and durations, and prepaid users can request the same from customer care with identity verification. Your Android phone's own call log is the same data for the recent past.

Can I get the CDR of another person's number?

No. Operators release call records only to the subscriber of that number or to law enforcement under a lawful request. Services offering anyone's CDR for a fee are operating illegally and usually fraudulently. For your employees' business calls, the lawful route is a call tracking app on the business phone with their knowledge.

What should a daily call report for a sales team include?

Per employee: calls dialled, calls connected, missed and rejected calls, unique numbers, total talk time, and the outcomes saved (interested, follow-up, not interested, lost). Per team: the same totals plus leads moved by status and follow-ups due tomorrow. A tracking app builds this from the phones automatically, so nobody fills a register at 7 pm.

How can a manager see every call the team makes?

With a call tracking app installed as the phone app on each staff phone, every incoming, outgoing and missed call on the business SIM syncs to the owner's dashboard by itself. The manager filters by employee and date to see calls made, calls connected, missed calls, talk time and the status saved after each call, without asking anyone for a report.

How many calls should a telecaller make per day?

Between 80 and 150 dialled calls a day is normal for outbound telecalling in India, which usually means 30 to 60 connected conversations. The number matters less than the connect rate and the outcomes saved after each call; an auto dialer removes the dead time between calls so the same person reaches the higher end without working longer.

Can a telecalling CRM work for a team working from home?

Yes. Each rep installs the app on their own Android phone with the business SIM, and every call they make from home is logged and synced exactly as it would be in the office. The owner sees calls, talk time and outcomes per person on the Web CRM, and leads are assigned remotely, so a distributed team runs like a single desk.

How to track employee calls on Android without call recording?

Install a call tracking app that becomes the phone app on each employee's Android phone. It reads the phone's own call log, so every call on the business SIM is counted with direction, duration and outcome, and syncs to the owner's report. No audio is recorded: you get who was called, when, for how long, what status was saved and what follow-up was set.

What happens if an employee uninstalls the tracking app or logs out?

Everything already synced stays in the owner's account. From that moment the phone stops reporting, and the dashboard shows when each phone last synced, so a phone that has gone quiet stands out the same day. In practice "the app was off all Tuesday" is itself the report.

What is a staff attendance app with selfie and location?

An app where employees punch in and out with a live selfie (with a blink or head-turn check so a photo cannot be used) and the phone's location checked against the office or site geofence. It replaces the register and proxy punching, works offline and syncs later, and exports a monthly report for payroll. In RMDialer it is part of the same dialer the team already uses.

Which languages does the RMDialer app support?

The app itself runs in 40 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia and Assamese for India, and Arabic, Bahasa, Tagalog, Swahili, Portuguese, Spanish, French and others for teams abroad. Each user picks their own language on their own phone.

How long does it take to set up a telecalling app for a team?

About an hour for a small team. Each person installs the app from the Play Store, signs in with the team account and sets it as the default phone app. The owner adds users on the Web CRM, imports the first lead list from Excel and assigns it. Most teams make their first auto-dialled calls the same day.

Do I need a virtual number to run a calling team?

No. A virtual number is only needed when calls must be routed through a cloud platform, for example for an inbound IVR. An outbound sales team can run entirely on business SIMs in the reps' phones, with the app logging every call and the owner reading the reports. Customers also answer known mobile numbers more readily than unfamiliar virtual ones.

How do I assign leads to telecallers automatically?

Import or connect the lead source once, then turn on round-robin assignment: each new lead goes to the next active employee in rotation, their phone pings, and the lead appears in their assigned queue with the auto dialer ready. Managers can reassign or transfer a lead any time and the transfer history stays on the record.

Why do telecallers stop using the CRM?

Because a separate CRM means typing after every call, and on a busy day the typing is the first thing dropped. The fix is a CRM that lives inside the dialer: the call creates the record, the outcome is two taps on the after-call screen, and the follow-up is set in the same motion. When updating the CRM costs nothing extra, it stays updated.

Cost is one flat price per user.”
