RTO (Return to Origin)

An RTO (return to origin) is a shipped order returning undelivered: the D2C margin killer, paying freight both ways to sell nothing. COD confirmation calls before dispatch are its cheapest cure.

Definitions checked 2 September 2026.

RTO, return to origin, is a shipped order coming back undelivered. The brand paid to send it, pays to bring it back, unpacks and restocks it if it is still saleable, and books no sale. In Indian D2C, where cash on delivery is common and a customer can simply decline at the door, RTO rates of a fifth to a third of orders are not unusual for brands that do nothing about it, and the cost is the difference between a profitable month and a loss.

Most RTOs are decided before dispatch or in the first hours after a failed delivery. Before dispatch, a confirmation call or WhatsApp on cash-on-delivery orders catches the impulse buyer who has changed their mind, the wrong address and the fake order, so the package never leaves. After a failed attempt, the NDR call recovers the customer who was out, nervous or unreachable. Both are calling routines that have to run every day at volume, which is exactly the shape of work an auto dialer with the order details on the call screen exists for.

The measure of the routine is simple: RTO rate before and after. Brands that add a same-day confirmation call to cash-on-delivery orders and a same-day NDR call typically cut returns sharply, at the cost of a caller's hours that the saved shipping pays for many times over. RMDialer, which we make, is built for that loop, with order fields on the lead, the confirmation WhatsApp sent automatically after the call, and the day's COD and NDR lists run as auto dial sessions.

RTO and related telecalling terms, with what each one means
Term What it means
RTO (Return to Origin) A shipped order returning undelivered: the D2C margin killer, paying freight both ways to sell nothing. COD confirmation calls before dispatch are its cheapest cure.
NDR (Non-Delivery Report) In D2C shipping, the courier’s “could not deliver” flag that starts a short clock toward return-to-origin. A same-day rescue call fixes most NDRs while the package is still in the city.
Auto WhatsApp Messages that send themselves on events: a call ending, a lead status changing, a sale: so the promised details arrive while interest is at its peak.
Auto dialer Software that dials phone numbers from a list automatically, one after another, so the caller never types a number and only does the talking. Also searched as automatic call dialer, automatic phone dialer or auto calling app: same tool, same category.

Questions

What do people ask about RTO?

What is RTO in e-commerce?

Return to origin: a shipped order returning undelivered, so the brand pays shipping both ways and sells nothing. It is the main margin leak in cash-on-delivery D2C.

How do I reduce RTO?

Confirm cash-on-delivery orders by call or WhatsApp before dispatch, call every NDR the same day, verify addresses and phone numbers at checkout, and track the RTO rate per source to find where fake or impulse orders come from.

What is a telecalling CRM?

A telecalling CRM is customer software built around phone calls: the lead list, the dialer, the call outcome and the follow-up live in one place. The mobile kind, such as RMDialer, replaces the Android phone app on each rep's handset so every call automatically becomes a record with a status, a remark and the next follow-up, and the manager sees the whole team on a web dashboard.

What is the difference between telecalling software and a CRM?

Telecalling software is built to make and track calls (dialing lists, call logs, per-caller reports). A CRM is built to hold customer records and pipeline stages. Most Indian sales teams need both at once, which is why a telecalling CRM combines them: the call itself creates and updates the customer record, so nobody types into a separate system after the call.

What is a CRM dialer?

A CRM dialer is a single app where the dialer and the customer record are the same thing: the call screen shows the lead, and ending the call updates it. It differs from a CRM with "dialer integration", which is two products joined by a sync. RMDialer is a CRM dialer for Android that runs on the user's own SIM.

How long does it take to set up a telecalling app for a team?

About an hour for a small team. Each person installs the app from the Play Store, signs in with the team account and sets it as the default phone app. The owner adds users on the Web CRM, imports the first lead list from Excel and assigns it. Most teams make their first auto-dialled calls the same day.

Do I need a virtual number to run a calling team?

No. A virtual number is only needed when calls must be routed through a cloud platform, for example for an inbound IVR. An outbound sales team can run entirely on business SIMs in the reps' phones, with the app logging every call and the owner reading the reports. Customers also answer known mobile numbers more readily than unfamiliar virtual ones.

How do I assign leads to telecallers automatically?

Import or connect the lead source once, then turn on round-robin assignment: each new lead goes to the next active employee in rotation, their phone pings, and the lead appears in their assigned queue with the auto dialer ready. Managers can reassign or transfer a lead any time and the transfer history stays on the record.

Why do telecallers stop using the CRM?

Because a separate CRM means typing after every call, and on a busy day the typing is the first thing dropped. The fix is a CRM that lives inside the dialer: the call creates the record, the outcome is two taps on the after-call screen, and the follow-up is set in the same motion. When updating the CRM costs nothing extra, it stays updated.

Can a telecalling CRM work for a team working from home?

Yes. Each rep installs the app on their own Android phone with the business SIM, and every call they make from home is logged and synced exactly as it would be in the office. The owner sees calls, talk time and outcomes per person on the Web CRM, and leads are assigned remotely, so a distributed team runs like a single desk.

What is lead management software for telecallers?

Software that turns every phone number into a lead with a source, a status, custom fields and a history, and keeps that record in front of the telecaller while they call. Inside a dialer it means the caller sees the lead before saying hello, updates it in two taps after the call, and never types the same information twice.

How much does a telecalling CRM cost per user in India?

It depends on whether calling is included. Mobile telecalling CRMs that call from your own SIM publish about ₹159 to ₹176 per user per month on yearly plans (their own sites, checked 22 Oct 2026), with the dialer included; desktop CRMs charge for the record-keeping and leave calling to a separate, separately billed tool. RMDialer is ₹159 per user per month on the yearly plan, plus taxes, every feature included, with a 3-day free trial and no card needed.

Do I need a CRM if I only have three or four staff?

A desktop CRM, probably not. A dialer that records calls and follow-ups automatically, yes, because a four-person team still loses enquiries to memory. The point of a mobile CRM at this size is not process, it is that nobody has to remember: the phone shows who the caller is and rings when the follow-up is due.

What is the best CRM for a small business in India?

For a business that sells on the phone, the best CRM is one that lives in the phone dialer, so it fills itself in from calls, costs a few hundred rupees per user and includes WhatsApp. A desktop CRM suits a team with a sales process and someone to maintain the data; most small Indian businesses have neither, which is why RMDialer puts the CRM inside the call.

How do I choose between telecalling CRMs?

Hold them to the same five checks: whether calls leave from the caller's own SIM or a virtual number, the price per user once WhatsApp and every seat are counted, whether the app itself runs in the languages your callers speak, what a caller does in the ten seconds after a call ends, and what happens to the record when the signal drops. RMDialer answers those with SIM calling, one price with WhatsApp inside, 40 languages, a two-tap after-call sheet and sync that catches up when the connection returns.

  • “Telecaller app for Android that my staff actually use. Enquiry list is assigned to each telecaller, the auto dialer calls it from their own SIM, and test ride bookings come to me live. Punjabi interface for the girls at the desk. Price is honest, everything included, no per-user surprises.”
Harpreet Singh Owner · Two-wheeler showroom Ludhiana
  • “We needed an auto dialer app that works on our own MTN and Airtel lines, not a call centre subscription in dollars. RMDialer runs on the phones my agents already have, dials the enquiry list, and the WhatsApp follow-up goes out after every call. Calls still go out on the SIM when data drops, and the notes sync once we are back on the network.”
Grace Okafor Managing director · Travel agency Lagos, Nigeria
  • “We looked for telecalling software for a nine-person loan team and every quote came with cloud seats and per-minute bills. RMDialer telecalling software runs on the callers' own Jio SIMs: the lead list dials itself, the remark goes on the number, and I get dials, connects and talk time per caller every evening. Cost is one flat price per user.”
Kavita Iyer Operations head · Loan DSA Chennai
  • “Earlier I was dialling 80 to 100 portal leads a day by hand from Excel. With RMDialer auto dialer app I import the sheet, press start and it calls one by one from my own Jio SIM. Between calls I mark Interested or Site visit in two taps and the follow-up rings me on time. Closed 3 flats last month from leads I would have forgotten.”
Rakesh Choudhary Real estate consultant · Property advisory Jaipur
  • “We tried two telecalling CRM software before this and my counsellors stopped filling them within a week. RMDialer is the phone app itself, so every admission enquiry gets logged whether they like it or not. The auto WhatsApp after call sends the fee structure by itself. I see all 4 counsellors' calls on the web CRM every evening.”
