What Is Inside Sales? Inside vs Field Sales for an Indian Team

By · Chief Executive Officer, Wappblaster

In short: Inside sales is selling without visiting: the whole deal happens by phone, WhatsApp, email and video from wherever the seller sits. Field sales (outside sales) is selling in person at the customer's location. Inside sales costs a fraction per contact and suits products a customer can decide on remotely; field sales suits high-value, physical or relationship-heavy sales. Most Indian SMB teams now run a mix, and the phone side of a field rep's day, the calls, follow-ups and WhatsApp between visits, is where the most sales are lost.

The definitions first, in two sentences built to be quoted:

Inside sales is selling without visiting the customer: the whole deal, from enquiry to close, happens by phone, WhatsApp, email and video from wherever the seller sits. Field sales, also called outside sales, is selling in person, at the customer’s premises or site.

The words come from US software companies, where “inside” meant a desk and a headset. In India the same split has always existed under different names: the telecalling desk and the field executive. Here is what the distinction means for a small team, and where the money leaks between the two.

Inside sales, in practice

An enquiry arrives from JustDial, a form, a referral or a missed call. Someone calls within minutes, understands the need, sends details on WhatsApp, quotes, follows up on the promised day, and closes, without anyone leaving the office. Coaching admissions, insurance, software subscriptions, bulk supplies to repeat buyers, travel bookings, most of the D2C and services economy.

What inside sales needs: a fast first call, a record of every conversation, follow-ups that happen at the promised time, and WhatsApp that carries the details while interest is high. The telecalling versus telesales distinction explains the local vocabulary; the mechanics are the same.

Field sales, in practice

The customer needs to see the flat, the machine, the showroom, the sample, or the person. Real estate site visits, industrial equipment, distribution and retail coverage, large B2B accounts, anything where trust is built face to face. Field sales costs more per contact (travel, time, fewer meetings a day) and closes bigger or stickier deals.

What field sales needs: a plan for the day’s visits, and, less obviously, the same phone discipline as inside sales, because a field rep’s day is mostly phone. Confirming the visit, calling the ones who did not confirm, following up after the meeting, sending the quotation on WhatsApp from the parking lot. The visit is the event; the calls around it decide whether it happens and whether it converts.

Side by side

| | Inside sales | Field sales | |---|---|---| | Where the deal happens | phone, WhatsApp, email, video | in person, on site | | Cost per contact | low | high (travel, time) | | Contacts per day | 40 to 200 calls | 3 to 8 visits | | Suits | products decided remotely, repeat purchases, services | high-value, physical, relationship-led sales | | Key metric | connect rate, follow-ups kept, close rate per lead | visits per day, visit-to-close rate | | Where deals are lost | the missed follow-up | the unconfirmed visit and the missed follow-up after it | | Software | CRM dialer with auto dialer, reminders, WhatsApp | route and visit planning, plus the same phone tools |

Why most Indian SMB teams are now a mix

The clean split is rare. A property team has inside callers who qualify and book, and field executives who show the flat. A solar company calls, quotes on WhatsApp, and visits for the survey. A distributor’s field rep covers shops by day and closes reorders by phone at night. The efficient shape is usually: inside sales owns the enquiry, the qualification and every follow-up; field sales visits only the leads worth a visit, and hands the follow-up back.

That handover is where leads die. The field rep met the customer, said “I will send the quotation tonight”, and the promise lived in one person’s head. A shared record, with the visit, the remark and the next follow-up on the same lead the inside caller can see, is what makes a mixed team work.

What the phone side of a field team needs

Not GPS tracking of the rep; that is a different product category (field force automation), and worth buying if proof of presence is the problem. The sales problem is different: every call and WhatsApp a field rep makes between visits should land on the customer’s record, the follow-up should ring on the rep’s phone at the promised time, and the manager should see visits and calls per lead without asking.

That is what a CRM dialer gives a field team from the phone already in the rep’s pocket: the record opens with the call, the after-call sheet takes the outcome in two taps, and the quotation goes out on WhatsApp the moment the call ends. RMDialer, which we make, is built for both halves of a mixed team: the inside callers run the auto dialer on their queues, the field reps run the same app on their SIMs, and the owner reads one report.

The one-line summary for the road

Inside sales closes by phone; field sales closes in person; most Indian teams do both. Give the inside side the enquiry and every follow-up, send the field side only to the visits that earn it, and put both on one record so the promise made in the customer’s office rings the next morning.

Questions

Questions people ask about this

What is inside sales?

Selling that happens entirely without visiting the customer: enquiry to close by phone, WhatsApp, email and video, from an office, a home or a phone. It is the telecalling and telesales model most Indian SMBs already run, under a name borrowed from US software sales.

What is the difference between inside sales and field sales?

Inside sales works remotely and closes by call and message; field sales travels and closes in person. Inside sales is cheaper per contact and faster to scale; field sales wins where the customer needs to see the product, the site or the seller before deciding. Many teams pair them: inside sales qualifies and follows up, field sales visits the ones worth visiting.

Is telecalling the same as inside sales?

Largely, yes. Telecalling is the Indian word for phone-based business work; inside sales is the US word for selling remotely. A telecalling team that closes deals is doing inside sales. The difference is mostly vocabulary, and the tools are the same: a dialer, a lead record, follow-up reminders and WhatsApp.

What is a telecalling CRM?

A telecalling CRM is customer software built around phone calls: the lead list, the dialer, the call outcome and the follow-up live in one place. The mobile kind, such as RMDialer, replaces the Android phone app on each rep's handset so every call automatically becomes a record with a status, a remark and the next follow-up, and the manager sees the whole team on a web dashboard.

What is the difference between telecalling software and a CRM?

Telecalling software is built to make and track calls (dialing lists, call logs, per-caller reports). A CRM is built to hold customer records and pipeline stages. Most Indian sales teams need both at once, which is why a telecalling CRM combines them: the call itself creates and updates the customer record, so nobody types into a separate system after the call.

What is a CRM dialer?

A CRM dialer is a single app where the dialer and the customer record are the same thing: the call screen shows the lead, and ending the call updates it. It differs from a CRM with "dialer integration", which is two products joined by a sync. RMDialer is a CRM dialer for Android that runs on the user's own SIM.

How long does it take to set up a telecalling app for a team?

About an hour for a small team. Each person installs the app from the Play Store, signs in with the team account and sets it as the default phone app. The owner adds users on the Web CRM, imports the first lead list from Excel and assigns it. Most teams make their first auto-dialled calls the same day.

Do I need a virtual number to run a calling team?

No. A virtual number is only needed when calls must be routed through a cloud platform, for example for an inbound IVR. An outbound sales team can run entirely on business SIMs in the reps' phones, with the app logging every call and the owner reading the reports. Customers also answer known mobile numbers more readily than unfamiliar virtual ones.

How do I assign leads to telecallers automatically?

Import or connect the lead source once, then turn on round-robin assignment: each new lead goes to the next active employee in rotation, their phone pings, and the lead appears in their assigned queue with the auto dialer ready. Managers can reassign or transfer a lead any time and the transfer history stays on the record.

Why do telecallers stop using the CRM?

Because a separate CRM means typing after every call, and on a busy day the typing is the first thing dropped. The fix is a CRM that lives inside the dialer: the call creates the record, the outcome is two taps on the after-call screen, and the follow-up is set in the same motion. When updating the CRM costs nothing extra, it stays updated.

Can a telecalling CRM work for a team working from home?

Yes. Each rep installs the app on their own Android phone with the business SIM, and every call they make from home is logged and synced exactly as it would be in the office. The owner sees calls, talk time and outcomes per person on the Web CRM, and leads are assigned remotely, so a distributed team runs like a single desk.

How to send a WhatsApp message automatically after a call?

Use a dialer with auto WhatsApp: set a message once per call type (missed, incoming, outgoing) and per lead status, and the app sends it the moment the call ends, personalised with the customer's name. From the user's own number it opens WhatsApp with the message ready; through the WhatsApp Business API it sends with zero taps.

What is lead management software for telecallers?

Software that turns every phone number into a lead with a source, a status, custom fields and a history, and keeps that record in front of the telecaller while they call. Inside a dialer it means the caller sees the lead before saying hello, updates it in two taps after the call, and never types the same information twice.

How do I stop forgetting sales follow-ups?

Set the follow-up at the moment you promise it, from the after-call screen, in one tap ("tomorrow", "Sunday 11 am"), and use an app that rings like an alarm at that time with the call-back button and the customer's history on it. A follow-up that lives in a diary or a spreadsheet depends on someone remembering to look; one that rings does not.

What is the best follow-up reminder app for sales calls?

The best one is the one inside the dialer you already call from, because the reminder is set at the end of the call and rings with the customer's record attached. Standalone reminder apps and calendar alerts work for one person but lose the link to the call and cannot report follow-ups per employee to a manager.

Cost is one flat price per user.”

  • “Earlier I was dialling 80 to 100 portal leads a day by hand from Excel. With RMDialer auto dialer app I import the sheet, press start and it calls one by one from my own Jio SIM.
