Short answer

What is an auto dialer?

An auto dialer is software that rings the numbers on a list for you, one after another, so a person only does the talking. Four kinds share the name: preview, progressive (often called power), predictive, and the hardware alarm dialer. RMDialer is the progressive kind on an Android phone: one call at a time, from your own SIM, with the next number ready when you hang up.

Key takeaways

  • The dialling is automated; the conversation never is. A human is on the line for every call.
  • Preview waits for you, progressive rings the next number when you are free, predictive over-dials for a floor of agents.
  • The wall-mounted alarm dialer in the search results is a different product with the same name.
  • On a phone it costs ₹159 per user a month on yearly billing in India, or $29 per user a year elsewhere. Basic calling is free.
  • Setting one up on Android takes three steps: a list, the SIM and the pause, then start.
The definition

What is an auto dialer, in plain words?

The same word covers a call-centre platform and a box on a wall. One sentence, taken apart into the six things it actually means; everything else on this page is detail on these.

It dials the list so you do not

You give it the numbers once. It rings the first, waits for you to finish, and rings the next. The dialling is the only thing it takes off your hands.

A person still does the talking

Whoever answers hears a human, because a human on your side is on the line for every call. Nothing is played from a recording.

It keeps a rhythm

Between one call ending and the next starting there is a pause you choose, in seconds. That pause is where the note gets written.

It keeps the record

What happened, one line of remark and a callback if one was promised, saved against that person before the next number rings.

Four kinds share the name

Preview mode, progressive mode, predictive mode, and a hardware alarm dialer wired to a burglar panel. They are different products with one word in common.

On a phone, it dials through the SIM

RMDialer is the phone kind: the call leaves from the number already in the handset, so the person answering sees a mobile they may already know.

The four kinds

What are the types of dialer for a call center?

Four products share one name. The question that tells them apart is how many numbers ring for each free caller, and whether a caller is there at all.

Kind How it dials What it needs Who it suits
Preview mode Shows you the record first and waits for you to press dial. One call at a time. A phone or a computer with a headset. No agent pool. A few high-value calls a day, where reading the record before the ring matters more than pace.
Progressive mode (also called power) Rings the next number by itself the moment you are free. One call at a time, always a human on the line. A phone, or one line per caller on a platform. This is the kind a SIM app is. Most sales and service teams from one caller up to a few hundred, on lists of people who know the business.
Predictive mode Rings more numbers than there are free agents, guessing how many will answer, and hands answered calls to whoever is free. A cloud platform, a floor of agents, and enough of them for the guess to work. Wrong guesses become silence for the person answering. Large outbound floors working long cold lists with short scripts, where the rules on abandoned calls are known and followed.
Hardware alarm dialer A box wired to a burglar or fire panel. When the alarm trips it rings a stored list of numbers and plays a message. A phone line or a SIM inside the box, and an alarm panel. No caller at all. Security installers. It shares the name and nothing else, which is why half the search results for "auto dialer" show a wall-mounted box.

A SIM app is the progressive kind and cannot be anything else, because a phone has one line and one person holding it. That is not a limitation to apologise for. Predictive mode exists to squeeze seconds out of a floor of agents, and it pays for those seconds with the silence some people hear when they answer. One call at a time, from a mobile number the person may already have saved, is the shape that keeps answer rates up for everyone below call-centre size.

Not the same thing

Is an auto dialer the same as a robocall or auto-redial?

Three things that get mixed up with it, and the one difference that separates each.

Robocall

A machine rings a number and plays a recording to whoever answers. No human on the calling side. Regulated hard in most countries because of that.

An auto dialer instead: An auto dialer rings one number, and you speak. If nobody is on your side of the line, nothing is dialled.

Auto-redial

The phone rings the same busy number again and again until it connects. One number, many attempts.

An auto dialer instead: An auto dialer moves through many numbers, one attempt each, and lets you decide when a number is tried again.

Click to call

A list on a screen where each row has a call button. You still tap every number, in order, and find the next one yourself.

An auto dialer instead: An auto dialer removes the tap. The next number rings after the gap you set, without you looking for it.

By hand or by app

Auto dialer vs manual dialer: what actually changes?

The talking takes the same time either way. These are the five places between calls where the day goes.

Between calls By hand With an auto dialer
Finding the next number Scroll the sheet, find the row, check it is not done. It is already ringing.
Dialling it Type ten digits, or copy and paste them. The SIM dials from the list.
Knowing who answered Remember, or ask "who am I speaking to?" Name, last remark and status are on screen before hello.
Writing the note A margin, a diary, or nothing by mid-afternoon. Two taps in the outcome sheet, and the queue waits for it.
Keeping the callback A reminder in your head. A reminder that rings on the day, with the record open.
Price

What does an auto dialer cost on a phone?

The phone kind has one price, per user, in two currencies. The platform kind has a seat price and a meter.

Ordinary calls: free

RMDialer works as the phone's dialer for nothing, with no account. Airtime stays on the mobile plan you already pay for, because the SIM places every call.

In India: ₹159 per user a month

On yearly billing, or ₹249 on quarterly billing, before tax. The list dialler, the records, reminders, WhatsApp and the browser side for managers are all in the one plan.

Elsewhere: $29 per user a year

Or $12 per user for three months, billed in dollars. Three days free first with everything on and no card, for the whole team.

No per-minute charge from the app, no lines to rent, no minimum number of users.

In a training room

How does a call-centre trainer in Cebu explain the four kinds to new hires?

An illustration with round numbers, the way it is taught in a training room rather than a brochure.

Picture a trainer in Cebu with twelve new hires on their first morning, half of whom have been told they will "work on the dialer" and none of whom know what that means. She starts with a printed sheet of 30 numbers and a desk phone, and has one trainee dial the first five by hand while the room times it. Eleven minutes, three conversations, one note that nobody can read afterwards. That is the manual dialer, and the point of the exercise is the eight minutes that were not talking.

Then she puts the same 30 numbers into RMDialer on an Android handset, sets a six-second pause, and lets a second trainee press start. The room hears the dial tone, the hello, the hang-up, the six seconds of silence while the trainee taps the outcome, and the next ring. Five calls in seven minutes, five notes, and the trainee never touched the keypad. "That is progressive mode," she says, "one number for one free person, and it is the kind you will use on a phone."

Preview mode she explains by switching the pause off and having the trainee press dial herself after reading each record: slower, deliberate, for the ten calls that matter. Predictive mode she can only describe, because it needs the whole floor: the platform rings 40 numbers for 30 agents, and when 32 people answer, two of them hear nothing and hang up. Then she shows the photo everyone finds when they search the phrase: a beige box screwed to a wall next to a burglar panel. "Also called an auto dialer. Not our department." By lunch the new hires can tell the four apart, and the room has agreed that the eight minutes were the whole lesson.

Auto dialer system, automated dialer, auto dial: the same question asked seven ways

A manager pricing a floor asks "what is an auto dialer system", a caller who has been handed a phone asks "how to set auto dialer", a buyer reading two quotes asks "auto dialer vs power dialer" or "predictive dialer vs auto dialer", and a trainer writing a slide asks for the "types of dialer for call center". Someone else just wants to know whether it beats dialling by hand. All of them are asking what the thing is and which kind they are looking at, and the four-row table above is the answer to every version of it.

You will also see it called what is an auto dialer system, what is an automated dialer, auto dialer vs power dialer, predictive dialer vs auto dialer, auto dialer vs manual dialer, how to set auto dialer and types of dialer for call center. They describe the same thing, so whichever phrase brought you here, this is the page for it.

How it works

How do you set up an auto dialer on a phone in three steps?

  1. 1

    Give the phone a list

A spreadsheet, a Google Sheet, the numbers from yesterday's call log or a queue a manager assigned. Name and number are enough; extra columns appear beside the name while it rings.

  2. 2

Pick the SIM and the pause

Questions

What is an auto dialer: questions people ask

What is an auto dialer system?

People say "system" when they picture a call centre: a platform, lines, a floor of agents and a manager's screen. That is one form of it. The other is an app on a phone that does the same job for one caller or a small team. RMDialer is the second form, with a browser side for whoever manages, so the word system fits it too, just without the lines to rent.

What is an automated dialer?

The same thing under a slightly longer name. An automated dialer takes a list and rings it in order, waiting for the caller between calls. What it does not automate is the voice: if you want a recording played to whoever answers, that is a robocaller, which is a different product with different rules. RMDialer is an automated dialer for Android, and every call on it is a person speaking.

What is auto dial on a phone?

On an ordinary handset, auto dial usually means a speed-dial key or the phone retrying a busy number. In an app like RMDialer it means something bigger: the phone works through a whole list on its own, ringing the next number after a pause you set, and asking you what happened before it moves on.

What is the difference between an auto dialer and a power dialer?

Auto dialer is the family name; power dialer is one member of it, the one that rings the next number the moment the caller is free, one call at a time. Progressive dialer means the same thing. So every power dialer is an auto dialer, but a predictive dialer or a preview dialer is an auto dialer that is not a power dialer. RMDialer works the power way on a SIM.

Predictive dialer vs auto dialer: which one do I need?

Ask how many people will be calling at once. Predictive mode only makes sense when a floor of agents is big enough for its guessing to work; with five callers it produces silent calls and annoyed customers. A team from one caller to a few hundred is better served by one call at a time from each person's own phone, which is what RMDialer does.

Power dialer vs predictive dialer: what changes for the person answering?

With a power dialer, the person answering always hears a human straight away, because the call was placed for a caller who was already free. With a predictive dialer there is sometimes a pause, or silence and a hang-up, because the platform rang more numbers than it had people for. RMDialer is the first kind, so nobody who picks up is left talking to nothing.

What is the difference between an auto dialer and a manual dialer?

A manual dialer is the keypad: you find the number, type it, and remember the note. An auto dialer takes the finding and the typing away, shows you who is answering, and asks for the note before the next call. The talking is the same length either way. What changes is the minutes in between, and RMDialer counts people reached at the end of the day so the difference is visible.

Predictive dialer vs preview dialing: which is slower and why?

Preview is the slowest on purpose. It shows the record and waits for the caller to press dial, which suits a short list of important calls where reading first matters. Predictive is the fastest for a large floor and the worst for a small one. In RMDialer the pause between calls is a setting in seconds, so one app covers a careful preview-style morning and a quick confirmation list in the afternoon.

How do I set up auto dial on an Android phone?

Install RMDialer from Google Play and let it be the phone app. Load a list: a sheet, a Google Sheet, numbers from the call log or an assigned queue. Choose the SIM slot and the number of seconds between calls. Press start. That is the whole setup, and the trial covers all of it for three days with no card.

What are the types of dialer for a call center?

Four are talked about: preview, which waits for the agent; progressive or power, which rings the next number when an agent is free; predictive, which rings ahead of the agents and hands over answered calls; and parallel, which rings several lines for one agent and drops the extras. Only the first two guarantee a human on every answered call. RMDialer is a progressive dialer on SIM phones.

Is an auto dialer a robocall?

No. A robocall is a recording played to whoever answers, with no person on the calling side, and most countries regulate it tightly for that reason. An auto dialer places a call for a human who then speaks. RMDialer cannot play a message to anyone: if the caller is not on the phone, no number is dialled.

Is auto-redial the same as an auto dialer?

No. Auto-redial tries one busy number again and again until it connects. An auto dialer works through many numbers, one attempt each, and lets you choose when a not-reached number is tried again. In RMDialer the numbers that did not answer stay in the list as a group, so you can ring them later in the day rather than hammering one of them.

What does an auto dialer need to run?

It depends on the kind. Predictive mode needs a cloud platform, rented lines and a floor of agents. Preview and progressive modes on a platform need a line per caller. The phone kind needs an Android handset with a SIM and mobile signal, and nothing else: RMDialer runs on Android 8 and newer, dials through the SIM, and keeps working with no data until the connection returns.

Does an auto dialer cost more than a normal phone plan?

On a phone, nothing extra per minute: the SIM places the call and the operator bills airtime as it always did. What you pay for is the app. Ordinary calling in RMDialer is free with no sign-in. The list dialler with records, reminders, WhatsApp and reports comes to ₹159 monthly per user when billed for the year in India (₹249 when billed quarterly), and $29 yearly per user outside India ($12 for three months). Cloud platforms add per-minute and line charges on top of the seat.

Which kind of auto dialer is RMDialer?

The progressive kind, on a phone. It rings one number at a time from the SIM in the handset, waits for the caller to save what happened, then rings the next after the gap chosen in seconds. There is no predictive mode and no recorded message, on purpose. Managers watch the day in the Web CRM in a browser. It runs on Android; there is no iPhone version.
