Short answer

What is the 1600 series number?

A 1600 series number is a phone number that begins with 1600 and belongs to a verified bank, NBFC, insurer, mutual fund, broker, pension body or government organisation, used only for service and transactional calls. RMDialer explains it here because telling number series apart now matters to anyone answering business calls in India. The Department of Telecommunications assigned the series, and TRAI directed financial entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA and IRDAI to move their service calls to it, with deadlines between 1 January and 15 March 2026. Promotional calls use a different series, 140. Since 10 August 2026 a further series, 1601, covers service calls from utilities, couriers and logistics firms. On 18 September 2026 TRAI said numbers from 140, 1600 and 1601 should not be flagged as spam. A 1600 call is far more likely to be genuine than a 10-digit number claiming to be your bank, but no genuine caller asks for an OTP.

Key takeaways

  • 1600 numbers are for service calls from banks, finance, insurance and government.
  • 1601 numbers cover utilities, couriers and logistics from 10 August 2026.
  • 140 numbers are promotional calls from registered telemarketers.
  • A genuine caller from any series never asks for your OTP or PIN.
Four kinds of number

How is the 1600 series different from 140, 1601 and a normal number?

The first digits now tell you what kind of organisation is calling and what the call is allowed to be about.

140xx

Who: Registered telemarketers

For: Promotional calls: offers, loans, cards, property projects

Promotion: Yes, by category, through DND

1600xx

Who: Banks, NBFCs, insurers, mutual funds, brokers, pension bodies and government organisations

For: Service and transactional calls: your account, a payment, a policy, a KYC update

Promotion: Not meant for promotion; a 1600 number may not be used to sell

1601xx

Who: Phase I from 10 Aug 2026: electricity, water, city gas and LPG distributors, couriers and logistics firms

For: Service and transactional calls: a bill, a gas booking, a delivery

Promotion: Not meant for promotion; promotional use is barred

Ordinary 10-digit mobile or landline

Who: People, and businesses outside those sectors

For: Anything; the number alone says nothing about who is calling

Promotion: Promotion from it should not happen at all

Where promotional calling begins and which rules come with the 140 series is set out on telemarketing software, and the short meaning of the promotional series is on 140 number series.

  • “Walk-in customers who "will come back Sunday" now get a reminder call on Saturday, and the sofa photos they liked go on WhatsApp from the app. Caller ID with the customer's name and last remark means my staff greet them properly. Simple business dialer, does the job.”
Kiran Gowda Owner · Furniture showroom Mysore
  • “I sell RMDialer under my own brand through the whitelabel program. My name on the Play Store, my pricing, my customers, and the Wappblaster team handles every update. Forty-odd customers in eight months without writing a line of code. The reseller panel with Razorpay makes renewals painless.”
Yusuf Ansari Founder · Software reseller Indore

Omar Hassan General manager · Furniture retailer Cairo, Egypt
  • “Staff attendance with selfie and location, inside the same dialer our supervisors already use for client calls. Punch in only works within the site geofence and needs a live selfie, so proxy attendance stopped. The monthly report exports for payroll. One app, two problems solved.”
Meenakshi Iyer HR and admin head · Facility management company Chennai
  • “We use RMDialer as the dialer layer under our own CRM through the API. Our system pushes the lead and the assignment, the agent's phone dials it, and every call event comes back by webhook with duration, outcome and remark. Integration took our developer about two days with the GitHub samples.”
Nikhil Bansal Product manager · Lending fintech Gurgaon
  • “Free telecalling app search brought me to the 3-day trial. Whole app, nothing locked. The WhatsApp itinerary goes out after each call by itself.”

When it rings

Should you trust a call from a 1600 number?

Mostly yes, with the same care you give any call about your money.

Expect it to be service, not selling

A 1600 or 1601 call should be about something you already have: an account, a policy, a bill, a delivery. A sales pitch from one is a reason to be careful.

Still never share an OTP or PIN

The series tells you which kind of organisation owns the number. No genuine bank or insurer asks for your OTP, PIN or password on a call, whatever number it comes from.

Be warier of ordinary numbers claiming to be a bank

With banks, NBFCs and insurers now required to use 1600 numbers for service calls, a plain 10-digit mobile saying it is your bank deserves extra doubt.

When in doubt, call back yourself

Hang up and ring the number printed on your card, passbook or the company’s official site. A real problem will still be there.

For businesses

Does the 1600 series change anything for a small business that calls customers?

For most, no. For a few sectors, yes, and it is worth knowing which.

The 1600 directions are addressed to the BFSI sector, the banking, financial services and insurance entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA and IRDAI, and to government bodies; TRAI’s stated aim is to curb impersonation of trusted financial institutions by fraudsters on ordinary numbers. If your business is one of them, its service and transactional calls to customers were meant to move to 1600 numbers by the deadlines above, and your telecom operator handles the allotment after checking your registration.

Since 10 August 2026 the 1601 series has done the same for its first sectors: electricity, water, city gas and LPG distribution, and courier, express, parcel and freight companies. Operators had 90 days to onboard them, numbers go only to the entities themselves rather than to aggregators, and they may not be used for promotion.

Everyone else, the shop, clinic, dealer, coaching centre or agency that calls its own customers about their own orders and bookings, keeps calling from its ordinary business number. That is the kind of calling RMDialer is built for: one call at a time from the business SIM, with each outcome saved. Promotional calling to people with no relationship to you is a different matter under TRAI’s rules, and TRAI’s 18 September 2026 amendment added new requirements for automated calls; check them for your own use.

A worked example

How would a shop owner in Kolhapur tell three morning calls apart?

An illustration of reading the series, not a real person’s story.

Picture a hardware shop owner in Kolhapur with a current account, a two-wheeler loan and a health policy. Before ten in the morning three unknown numbers ring.

The first begins with 140: a credit card offer. The owner knows it is promotion from a registered telemarketer and, since the shop is registered on DND for that category, reports it through the TRAI app. The second begins with 1600: the insurer, reminding him that the health policy renews next week and confirming the nominee. It is a service call about something he already holds, so he talks, and pays on the insurer’s own app later.

The third is an ordinary 10-digit mobile number. The voice says it is his bank and that his account will be blocked unless he shares the OTP that is about to arrive. Banks were required to move service calls to 1600 numbers by the start of 2026, and no bank asks for an OTP anyway. He hangs up and calls the number printed on his passbook, where the branch confirms nothing is wrong.

1600 series, 1600 number series, 1600 series calls: the same numbering series

"1600 series", "1600 number series" and "1600 series calls" all ask about the same range of numbers. Some people type "160 series" or "1600xx"; both mean the 1600 numbers used by banks, financial services, insurance and government for service calls. The newer 1601 series follows the same idea for utilities, couriers and logistics.

You will also see it called 1600 series, 1600 number series, 1600 series calls, 1600 series number india and 1601 series number. They describe the same thing, so whichever phrase brought you here, this is the page for it.

How it works

How do you tell a 1600, 1601 or 140 call apart?

  1. 1

    Read the first digits

140 is promotion, 1600 is finance or government service, 1601 is utilities, couriers and logistics. Anything else is an ordinary number.

Read the first digits in the RMDialer app: 140 is promotion, 1600 is finance or government service, 1601 is utilities, couriers and logistics....
  2. 2

Match the call to the series

A 1600 caller should be talking about something you already hold. If the call and the series do not match, be careful.

Questions

1600 series number: what people ask

What does a 1600 series number mean in India?

A 1600 series number is a telephone numbering series set aside in India for service and transactional calls from banks, financial services, insurance and government organisations. The Department of Telecommunications assigned it, and TRAI directed banks, NBFCs, insurers, mutual funds, brokers and pension bodies to move their service calls to it by early 2026, so people can recognise a genuine call from a regulated financial entity.

Are 1600 phone numbers in India real or fake?

They are real, and they are harder to fake than ordinary numbers, because telecom operators allot them only to verified entities in the banking, financial services, insurance and government sectors. A call from a 1600 number should come from such an organisation. Still, never share an OTP, PIN or password on any call; if unsure, call back on the official number.

What is the SEBI 1600 number series advisory?

SEBI announced the new 1600 series in April 2025 as a way to help investors spot genuine calls and avoid fraud, and asked the entities it regulates to use it for calls to investors. TRAI later set deadlines: 15 February 2026 for mutual funds and asset management companies and 15 March 2026 for qualified stockbrokers, with other SEBI intermediaries free to move voluntarily.

Which number is 1600?

Any number that begins with 1600 is from the service and transactional series for banking, financial services, insurance and government. You will see calls from it for things like a loan account, a card, a policy renewal or a KYC update. It is not an emergency number and it is not a promotional line.

What type of call is a 1600 mobile code?

A service or transactional call, meaning a call about something you already have with that organisation, such as an account, a payment or a policy. The series is not for promotion. Promotional calls from registered telemarketers use the separate 140 series.

What are 160 series numbers?

People often say 160 series when they mean the 1600 series, the numbers banks, insurers and government bodies use for service calls. In 2026 a second series, 1601, was added for utilities, couriers and logistics companies. The promotional series is 140.

What is the 1601 series number?

A newer series for service and transactional calls from sectors other than banking, finance, insurance and government. TRAI started it in Phase I on 10 August 2026 for electricity, water, city gas and LPG distributors and for courier, express, parcel and freight companies, with telecom operators given 90 days to onboard them. It may not be used for promotional calls.

Is 1600 a good number to answer?

Generally yes, if you have an account, policy or investment with a bank or financial company, because the series is reserved for their service calls. Answer, but treat it like any call about your money: listen, never share an OTP or PIN, and verify on the official number before acting on anything unusual.

How to get 1600 series number for a business?

Only eligible entities can get one: those regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA or IRDAI, and government organisations. The entity applies to a telecom operator, which verifies its registration before allotting numbers. Ordinary businesses outside those sectors cannot get a 1600 number; utilities, couriers and logistics firms now go to the 1601 series instead.

Can I block 1600 series calls with DND?

DND registration is about promotional calls, which come from the 140 series, and it does not switch off genuine service calls about your own account. A 1600 number is not supposed to be used for selling at all. If you get a promotional call from one, report it through the TRAI DND app or 1909.

Will 1600 numbers be marked as spam on my phone?

They should not be. TRAI’s amendment of 18 September 2026 says numbers from the special commercial series, 140xx, 1600xx and 1601xx, shall not be flagged as suspected spam to recipients, so genuine calls from regulated senders are not missed. Caller ID apps may still show their own labels.

Does a small business need a 1600 number to call customers?

Not unless it is regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA or IRDAI, or is a government body; and utilities, couriers and logistics firms now use 1601. A shop, clinic, dealer or agency calling its own customers from its business SIM does not need either series. Promotional calling to strangers is a separate matter, with its own registration and rules.

Can an insurance agent or loan agent call from a personal number?

The 1600 directions are addressed to the regulated entities, the insurers, banks and NBFCs themselves, for their service and transactional calls. How they apply to agents, advisers and channel partners calling on the company’s behalf is for each company and its regulator to say. Ask your company which numbers you may use.

How many companies use 1600 numbers?

By December 2025, about 570 entities had adopted the 1600 series, using over 3,000 numbers, according to TRAI’s press release of 17 December 2025. Since then the deadlines for banks, NBFCs, insurers, mutual funds, brokers and pension bodies have all passed, so the number has grown.

Is RMDialer related to the 1600 series?

No. RMDialer is a phone dialer and CRM that businesses use to call their own customers from their own SIM. It does not allot numbers of any series. We explain the 1600 series because our customers and their customers ask about it, and because telling the series apart helps everyone answer the right calls.
